Dental Implants in Later Life: Is There an Age Limit?

Marek Leško
MDDr.

“At my age, I should not invest in my teeth anymore, should I?” At m2stoma Brno, we regularly hear this from people in their seventies. The truth is very different.

Dental implants work just as reliably in later life as they do in younger adults. A systematic review and meta-analysis published in Clinical Oral Implants Research (2025) compared 27 studies involving 3,892 implants in patients aged 65–75 and over 75. Five-year survival was 96.8% in the older group and 92.1% in the younger group. The higher figure among the oldest patients has a straightforward explanation: doctors monitor risk factors more strictly and select candidates more carefully.

Literature reviews had already described implant treatment in older adults as clinically reliable more than twenty years ago. Since then, materials and protocols have improved significantly. Bioactive surfaces, CBCT planning and guided surgery now give people in their seventies results that are just as good as those previously seen in people in the middle of their working lives.

What really affects the outcome?

The real risk factors are not related to the year of birth in your identity card, but to your general health and hygiene habits.

  • Controlled diabetes is not a barrier. Uncontrolled diabetes significantly increases the risk of implant failure because it affects healing and the immune response.
  • Smoking approximately doubles the likelihood of implant loss. If you smoke, this is a stronger risk factor than your age.
  • Bisphosphonates, medicines often prescribed for osteoporosis, are a relative contraindication. They are a reason for caution, not an automatic reason to refuse treatment. With long-term use, the procedure must be planned carefully in cooperation with your treating physician.
  • Healthy gums are essential. If you have periodontitis, it must be treated first. Healthy gums are a prerequisite for reliable implant stability.
  • Bone condition matters. Bone is gradually lost after years without a tooth. It may be necessary to rebuild it with bone augmentation or a sinus lift, but the long-term result can still be stable.
  • Anticoagulants do not automatically rule out treatment. If you take blood-thinning medication, we coordinate the procedure with your physician.

Before implant placement at m2stoma Brno, we discuss your medical history and medication in detail and carry out a CBCT scan, a 3D image that shows the condition of the bone precisely.

What does the treatment involve?

The basic process does not differ from treatment in younger adults. We begin with a consultation and 3D imaging, which form the basis of your treatment plan. This often includes bone augmentation, because many patients come to us years after their teeth were extracted.

The procedure itself is carried out as an outpatient treatment under local anaesthesia. If you are anxious about the procedure or the reconstruction is more complex, we can offer conscious sedation, a light form of sedation that creates a calm state and makes the procedure feel shorter.

Healing is somewhat slower in later life, by a matter of weeks, but the success rate is comparable. You may receive a fixed bridge supported by implants, such as All-on-4 or All-on-6, or a removable, snap-on hybrid denture that you take out at home. The choice depends on your anatomy, the level of comfort you want and your budget. You can compare this with a conventional solution in the article Dental Implants vs. a Bridge.

What can implants improve?

A removable denture that moves in the mouth can limit the pleasure of eating and make speaking less comfortable. An implant can address these problems.

  • Chewing. You can eat meat, apples and nuts. Your diet becomes more varied and complete.
  • Comfort. No more worries about odour, a shifting denture or embarrassment when laughing.
  • Preserving jawbone. Bone loaded by an implant is not resorbed in the same way. Your face can therefore retain its shape.
  • Longevity. An implant placed at the age of 70 may serve you for the rest of your life, often for more than 20 years. The prerequisite is regular care and check-ups.

How much do implants cost at m2stoma?

At m2stoma Brno, placement of a dental implant starts at CZK 19,516 (approx. €810), and a monolithic ceramic crown on an implant starts at CZK 18,105 (approx. €750). Bone augmentation starts at CZK 18,208 (approx. €755), while an implantology consultation with a CBCT scan of the entire dentition costs CZK 1,590 (approx. €65).

The final quotation depends on the condition of the bone, the type of restoration and whether augmentation is needed. Czech public health insurers do not cover dental implants. You can find the current overview in the price list; after your initial examination, we will prepare an individual treatment plan with the total price.

Frequently Asked Questions

At what age is it too late for dental implants?

There is no upper age limit. Studies include patients over 80 with very good results. Your overall health, not your date of birth, is what matters.

Will an implant last as long in later life as it does in younger people?

Yes. The meta-analysis found five-year survival of 96.8% in patients over 75. An implant placed at the age of 70 can serve you for 20 years or more.

Is implant placement more painful in later life?

No. Pain perception is not determined by age. The procedure is performed under local anaesthesia, and we offer conscious sedation for a calmer experience.
