How does dental care affect your health?

Marek Leško

MDDr.

Many people see dental care primarily as a matter of aesthetics – we want white, straight teeth because a beautiful smile looks good. But healthy teeth are not just important for appearance. The condition of your teeth and gums has a direct impact on your entire body. That’s why it makes sense to take care of your mouth regularly, not just when a problem arises.

What causes poor oral hygiene?

The mouth is the gateway to the body. If bacteria accumulate there due to poor hygiene or inflamed gums, these bacteria can enter the bloodstream and cause problems elsewhere. Long-term neglect of dental care can contribute to inflammation in the body, affect the cardiovascular system and even complicate the treatment of diabetes.

Studies show that people with gum disease have a higher risk of heart attack and stroke. Similarly, diabetics – those who have diabetes and poor oral hygiene often face poorer healing and a higher susceptibility to infections.

The condition of the gums is also influenced by hormonal balance – for example, during pregnancy, the gums are more sensitive and more easily inflamed. The so-called pregnancy gingivitis is a very common problem, which is manifested by bleeding when brushing the teeth, redness or swelling of the gums. Although it often resolves after childbirth, untreated inflammation can negatively affect not only the mother’s health, but also the course of the pregnancy.

Similarly, a lack of saliva can worsen oral health. Saliva protects teeth from bacteria and helps neutralize the acidic environment after eating. When saliva is not produced enough – for example, due to stress, medication or age – it causes dry mouth ( xerostomia ). This increases the risk of cavities and bad breath.

Healthy gums and clean teeth are not just about not having cavities. They are about preventing inflammation, which can strain the immune system and worsen the overall condition of the body.

How to prevent dental problems?

The good news is that most of these problems are easily preventable. The basics are regular brushing twice a day (or after each meal), using interdental brushes, and visiting a dental hygienist at least twice a year.

Professional cleaning will remove tartar and pigments that you can’t remove with a regular toothbrush, and will help prevent inflammation and cavities.

How to keep your teeth healthy?

  • Brush your teeth thoroughly, not just quickly “by eye”.
  • Use interdental appliances – it is between the teeth that most cavities occur.
  • Visit your dental hygienist and dentist regularly, not only when you have problems.
  • Eat a healthy diet – sugars and acidic drinks weaken teeth.
  • Don’t underestimate even minor inflammation or bleeding gums.

Healthy teeth are not just a sign of a beautiful smile. They are an investment in overall health – and one that always pays off.
